I just love how necessity is the mother of invention sometimes. Today it proved to be true once again. I'm participating in a craft swap and while I made one item, I didn't want it to seem skimpy. One of those "I participated and all I got was one item while another person got three" things. So, I thought and thought. What else could I make that is practical and pretty? The person I'm making for is a knitter so I thought aha! Stitch markers!

And this is what I came up with:

I really like it. Next I want to try a necklace. Maybe something will make it into my shop. I was all set to take photos and batteries died! Grr. So that is on the docket for this week.

Holiday Craft Show

Last weekend I had a chance to participate in a local craft show at a dance studio. This is my first real time craft show where the general public could look at my work upclose. Pretty cool!

Needless to say, I did better than I ever thought possible. I know I've been slow on the uptake to update my Etsy site (something I'm going to work on this week now that I'm on break) but I was working up a storm in prep for this show and my work paid off. I sold something like 4-5 scarflettes, a children's scarf, 2 adult scarves, and 2 ceramic pieces. Yay!

Hiatus II

Until further notice (ie winter break) I can't keep up the M-F posting schedule. It sucks, and I really hate I don't have the time to keep this up as I'd like, but I know this is temporary (ie once I finish my final year of college) and then I can restart the Etsy love.

I don't know if the fall leaves have peaked by you (they have for us finally in the Midwest) but in the spirit of so much color, I went on a hunt for leaves on Etsy. I was at one of those historical re-enactment villages a couple weeks ago and I learned how to fingerspin wool. I've always liked watching the spinning demonstrations, and while I'd like to move up to that, fingerspun wool is fun too. So, let's take a look at FiberOptic, a great little yarn shop run by a PhD chemist who used their knowledge to form a superior yarn. I have to say, I love the color choices!

I saw this happy print of a couple owls as it floated past in the time machine and went to investigate. The creator is LeeArtHaus. Her shop is filled with prints of owls, birds, robots and the like in muted earth tones mixed with various bright colors. It may just be me, but methinks they like birds. :)

Wow. September 1st. Can someone explain to me how that happened?
Usually I welcome the beginning of fall as a relief of the ridiculously hot humid weather of August. I feel that my summer was really short so I'm surprised to see that we're entering the last quarter of the year so soon. Time to embrace it. Think of all the cute sweaters to wear, the hot chocolate or mulled cider to drink, and of course, autumn leaves to admire. Talk about a fleeting thing, autumn leaves are so pretty yet so transitory. Unless you have a shop like Flores Del Sol, where you can preserve the beauty of autumn leaves and flowers for months to come. All of you Etsy newbies, come look at her photography. I love how the bursts of color contrast against the sleek white backgrounds. What a way to command attention!

I never get bored with ways to store things. While I know I've featured other sellers who create bags and pouches and camera bags and so on, I can't get enough. It's a sickness. I was bouncing along in Pounce and came across these lovely owl plushies in Plants and Animals' shop. I wish I'd found these a few weeks earlier as a dear friend is expecting her second child, whose in-utero nickname is Owl. Still, these plushes are great for any age. There are other items in store including prints and drawings. The colors are relaxing and I really like how different fabrics and patterns are layered together.

There are Fridays where I pick my Featured Seller and wonder hm, what is their Etsy shop all about? Sometimes I go through a bunch of blogs and names and blogs start to blur. By the time I do revisit a shop, I think aha! Backwoods Creations is a good example of this. Earlier in the week, she'd commented on my blog and I'd checked out her shop and thought aw cute, birds! Seeing that she's from Maine, I bet she has a lot of inspiration! It was a welcome surprise to go back to her shop to pick out items to feature today and realize it was the bird shop! Yay!

Nightmares and New Listings

If you ever wonder what I do during the day, I teach ceramics part time at a local arts center. The camps I teach run 2 weeks a session, and in that time I have to cram a lot of work into the kiln and make sure everything gets out on a somewhat timely basis. For those of you unfamiliar with the ceramic process, the kiln is like a bigger, badder oven. Instead of baking sweet potato fries at 350 degrees for a half hour with about a 20 minute cooldown back to room temperature, a kiln fires up to 1870 degrees and takes a few days to cool down to room temperature. Enter my nightmare.

I was drifting off to sleep last night reviewing my day when I realized oh crap. The kiln. You see, for some ungodly reason my brain decided today was Friday, the last day of the current session and the day the kids glaze their work to go back into the kiln. The kiln wasn't quite done yet Wednesday and I quickly did math in my head and realized my kids wouldn't have anything to glaze. The horror.

And then my brain realized today is Thursday. Duh. Brain, why have you forsaken me?

Speaking of ceramic art, I've decided to go through my inventory and post some more older work to get some room for the NEW work I have going on in the studio! Ovenware, mugs, tumblers, yay!

I just don't feature enough painting on my blog so I'm pleased to feature Kim VanDerHoek. What caught my eye about these was the bold color and brush strokes. I love the detail in the cardinal's feathers and water in the koi fish painting. I'm always glad to see fine artists exhibiting on Etsy and what I appreciate about Kim's shop is the "affordable studies" section of her shop. Still beautiful paintings for an affordable price. Art for everyone! I like it.

I was bouncing through Pounce today and came across Quecraft. Her shop is based out of Saigon and she sells interesting hair clips and sticks. I've never gotten my hair to stay with hair sticks (I have ultra fine hair so there you go) so I've admired those who can put their hair up in a bun and keep it there without a ponytail elastic.

Flapperdoodle is getting a lot of love recently, apparently the shop was just voted "the most promising new shop on Etsy". I didn't even know that was a distinction, so that's pretty cool! What drew me (ha) to the shop was the illustration. If you read her shop profile you can read about the evolution of her art (and the shop names to go along). Very interesting read.

I've been reading a lot of Questionable Content lately, so as homage to the Northampton, MA location of the strip (a town that has some kickin' ice cream, music and art shops) I decided to feature an Etsian from there. Welcome MollyHatch, a wonderful shop filled with useful ceramic items like mugs and tumblers. The designs on her pieces are made with inlay, a ceramic process in which lines are drawn on the clay and filled with a contrasting colored slip. Nice! I love the look of these pieces.

Apparently Gingersnappz got her start selling nursing covers to the masses, but that is not what drew me to her shop. I need hairbands. Oh, do I ever. You see, teaching a bunch of little kids to play in clay while trying to keep the hair out of your face equals clay in your hair. It's stylish. Even when you're running errands after class and are unaware of this fact.

So. Hairbands. Necessity.

Why I love Ginger's is because of her fabric choices. They coordinate well and I can see them going with a variety of outfits. I thought about trying to make my own but you know what, I'm going to support Etsy instead. Which is why I write about them here.

Some of you (unless you live Down Under and are currently in winter) may view me as crazy for salivating over warm capelets and fuzzy shrugs but I love them. Even in summer I love looking at them. When the weather starts to cool - beyond the out of season cooler July temperatures we've been having - that is the one thing I'm looking forward to. Scarf season! So, I've been able to appreciate those artists that much more who can create beautiful journals. Disconsolator is one of those artists who has it down. I figured we'd trade in the loud and booming fireworks from this weekend for something a little more pleasant to the ears today. Enter TskDesign (aka Tim Kline). Tim creates unique windchimes he calls Coast Chimes. What really drew me to his design was the color. I love the different shades of colors and shapes. Tim uses wood, stone, beach-glass inspired artist made glass and various metals in his pieces.

I was bopping around the front page of Etsy, wondering what to feature next when I decided to look at bookmarks. No particular reason, I just like to see what comes up with various categories. I came across a couple bookmarks from Plunkett Designs and when I visited their page realized they sold more than just that. Balanced is one of those shops where I don't know how she does it, I'm not sure I want to know how she does it, but I love it and it is amazing.

It may be 85 degrees now and hardly appropriate for a scarf, but I've already started working on my Winter 2009 collection. So, that takes yarn. This shop was an oldie-but-goodie find for me as I thought I favorited this shop before with the intention of putting it on my blog. It must've gotten away from me. When I found RedYellowandBlueInk's shop again I knew I had to pounce. The shop is after my heart: bird themes AND cool repurposed supplies in the forms of traffic light discs. There are bird feeders and other items like towels in the shop. For the images Gocco and linoleum prints are used.
The other great thing is that with each purchase a partial amount will be donated to various causes like the Audubon Society, Nature Conservancy and Endangered Species International. Each listing specifies what cause is highlighted. Pretty cool.

I decided to venture over to the "woodworking" category of Etsy to see what's been going on over there and found these wooden boxes made by Tattoo Dreams out of Indiana. The concept is simple, stamping different images and words on to a wooden box (almost like 3D scrapbooking) and then turning the object into a functional yet beautiful piece. I found Imeon Design in Etsy chat and fell in love with her charming shop. One of the reasons I like her cards, invites and stationery so much is because she actually takes the time to put in the little details, whether it be a hand-cut dinosaur or little cherry on top of an ice cream cone. Happy Friday! Time for another long awaited featured seller post and this week's winner is ExoDesign, a brand new shop on Etsy. She began making jewelry while studying design in school, and her artistic flair shows not only in her shop appearance but also her jewelry choices. I love the color choices and gradients. All of her pieces are one-of-a-kind and she invites custom work. According to her profile, she works with heavy and fine gauge silver, sterling silver, gold filled wire/chain, and hand selected semi-precious gemstones.

I was toying with the Shop Local function on Etsy and found a shop I had not seen before, even though they have been around for quite some time. Meet Loose String, maker of the cutest pincushions I've seen in awhile. All handcrafted, felted, sewn, embroidered, the end result is something you want to put on your craft table and admire.

A Couple Questions

As you know, the point of this whole blog is to advertise not only what goes on in my shop, but also what's going on in many of the interesting, quirky and beautiful shops of yours. Lately I've been thinking about how to bring my blog to the next level (whatever level that is) and I need some feedback from you, my loyal readers.

Question 1 - How do you feel about advertising? We're not talking Google AdSense, I don't necessarily like having ads tailored to what I'm writing at the time as I find it a little 1984-ish, but what about Project Wonderful? Something that allows more Etsy shops to be discovered? Love the idea but not on my blog? Let me know.

This next part is more of a comment than a question, but is there anything else you'd like to see in my blog posts? More chances for giveaways? Should I write more about CPSIA legislation issues? Should I write about my shop every so often about process and new items? What do you want as readers?

ByApryl is such a convenient shop name as the trees I'm about to show you are indeed by Apryl. Can't forget that, now can you? You also won't forget her shop once you see these gem trees. Maybe you've seen them. They're advertised in the wedding section on Etsy for cake toppers, but these trees would look awesome just displayed in your home. Apryl learned the art of tree sculpture and wire wrapping jewelry from her grandparents, and the experience shows. I certainly would not know how to even start the process, let alone make something this good. So without further ado, the trees!

You might have seen these before under the username ThumperLove, but now you can get these totally awesome produce bags from Love For Earth. They're moving shop to their new home so I figured I'd give a shoutout for such an awesome idea. We've seen tote bag after shopping bag after lunch bag on Etsy, but what I haven't seen until now is a reusable produce bag. No more getting those plastic bags to put oranges or zucchini into in the store. I think this idea is fabulous.

I was surfing through Pounce again when I came across DoubleThinkUK, a brand new shop set up by an art student based in Glasgow. She says she specializes in presenting her work in new and unusual ways, and she's definitely on to something: printing on to pillows. Each image is a limited edition of 100, so once they're gone, they're gone! However, this means there will always be something new and worth checking out over the coming months.

I felt Monday needed some nice photography and Point of View fits the bill. There are plenty of nice small ACEO sized prints available for 3 dollars and other larger prints around 25 dollars. Any of these images would go a long way to spruce up an area in your home or give as a gift. Plus, Point of View is a member of Etsy For Animals, which is fitting when you see the majority of the subject matter of deer and birds and so on. Check these out:
